Interview with Burn The Fleet, by Cherry Pullinger
You were based in Southampton and went to Uni together, was it a coincidence that you all went to the same Uni or were you friends beforehand?
Well it’s a bit of both to be honest, most of us were friends with one or two of each other but we didn’t all know each other, to be honest basically Andy knew everyone and introduced me (Ross) to the others. They were all jamming and needed a drummer so I said I’d have a go as it was just for a laugh so didn’t mind trying. At the time they were writing some crazy unstructured stuff so it was a challenge but super fun as id never really played the drums properly before.
How would you describe the Southampton music scene?
The Southampton scene is one of the best I’ve ever seen, as im not originally from Southampton and have played in bands before I’ve seen a fair few scenes and a lot of them seem to be quite competitive whereas everyone in Southampton just wants to help each other out. When one band gets successful they do what they can to help other local bands, its fantastic to be honest.
Was the band formed while you were still at Uni?
Yeah we formed the band I think in the beginning of 3rd year or end of 2nd year so it was a bit of a juggling act in the beginning but we didn’t really take it too seriously at first we just jammed and started recording an e.p before we booked any shows.
What advice would you give to bands that forming within University?
One thing for sure I would say no matter what’s happening unless someone is paying you silly money, stay and finish Uni first as I have seen bands form at Uni and quit and then break up before they would have even finished their studies, it makes no sense. Other than that get involved in the local scene and get some shows at the local venues.
You have a brand new, self titled EP - can you tell us a bit about it?
The E.P is a 5 track which basically contains 5 stories, we did a little booklet with the pre order that explained the meanings behind the songs along with the lyrics and some artwork and stuff. We didn’t want to write about stuff that was specific to one person, as we all like to be involved in the writing process so we found it easier to come up with a situation or story and all write about that.
How have fans reacted to it?
It seems to be going down really well, all the reviews have been really positive so we couldn’t be happier to be honest.
You recently played a hugely successful show at the Joiners to celebrate the EP, how did it go?
The show was amazing, we put the E.P on sale for the first time at that show and the atmosphere was great, we were a little nervous what with it being our first headline show there and stuff but it couldn’t have gone better, it was something like 20 tickets off selling out so yeah we were super happy with it.
You played alongside Boys With X-Ray Eyes, Viva Sleep and Forever Can Wait, are you all fans of these bands? Were they your first choices or were there other bands you wish you could of had supporting?
We put the line up together ourselves, we were doing a mini tour with BWXE and Viva Sleep are our label mates and Forever Can Wait are a local band we wanted to give a chance to so the line up was a pretty easy choice to be honest.
Is playing the Joiners like a second home to you now?
Yeah we love that place, I feel more comfortable there than anywhere I have ever played and the sound is so awesome, were so lucky to have that venue as our local venue.
The set was longer than your average set, how did you keep playing when you got tired?
I have no idea to be honest, we thought playing the first 3 songs back to back was a good idea and about 6 mins in I was already regretting it but the show was awesome so you just keep pushing through, adrenaline I guess helps!
Will you be working on an album any time soon?
We’re currently writing a new record but were going to spend a lot of this year touring this record before we commit to recording anything new. The material is definitely coming together as we don’t wanna make people wait too long as those that have knows us from the beginning will be getting tired of hearing the same songs so much.
What is next for Burn The Fleet?
We will continue to write the next record but for now we have a video coming out on Punktastic.Com so hopefully that will get on TV then we will be touring a lot in support of the E.P and trying to get ourselves out there!
