Interview with Silent Disguise, by Cherry Pullinger

Silent Disguise are fast becoming one of the hot new bands in the world of metal so we caught up with the band to talk about the start of their careers and what is next for the band.

You guys met at school, did you all meet through different classes or did your love of music bring you together?
Weirdly, Rob and I met on MySpace and only later realised that we went to school together. We were in different classes, so it was the love of music that really brought us together.

Why did you decide to try playing music together?
I was desperate to get in a band and play music. We were at a school for performing arts, where I studied music and most of my mates were in bands, so I wanted a way to release my creative juices.

How long did it take before things really worked?
Well, because of complicated situations it took about 2 years before we knew we were on to something that was a little bit more than just a hobby band.

In the very early days of the band, you suffered many line up changes, why was this? Were the band just finding their feet?
It was all to do with unstable members that weren't sure if they wanted to do it or not. We would replace the member then find out that they were exactly the same as their predecessor.

Where does the name Silent Disguise come from?
We actually used to be called 'Colliera' but we all thought that sounded to much like a disease, so we wanted something that was definitely a metal bands name that also had and edge of subtlety about it because we aren't as in your face as most metal bands around right now.

You penned your first EP 'New Heights,' how much of a learning curve was creating a new EP?
It was an interesting process to say the least. Because it was all self produced not all of the band members were around for the whole process which can be awkward when it comes to creative decisions because some of the people who weren't there may not like some of it. Some of the vocal tracks were recorded with a hangover, however this meant that we have some funny out-takes from the EP recording. It was definitely a learning curve. Since then, we have changed our writing process so that it is more studio based and it seems to be doing the job, we hare happier than ever with the writing/recording process now.

Did it prepare you? Shock you?
It was a great way to see what went wrong so that it could be rectified for the next recording. We were shocked at how well it was being received. I think that was a key part of how we managed to get a name for ourselves in the local area so quickly.
The EP did extremely well, how did you feel?
Unbelievable. It's a feeling that you can't describe when you see people singing your own songs back at you. Knowing that people actually care about what you are doing/writing is just an unreal feeling.

When did you realise that you were doing something right?
When people started turning up to shows without us asking them to. Suddenly it was like we had genuine fans rather than just mates who turned up to our gigs.

You now have a new EP, Blueprints, can you tell us a little about it?
Blueprints is the natural progression that the bands sound has taken since the release of New Heights EP. It has a pop'y track, a quieter acoustic style song and 2 heavier ones. We really wanted to push how diverse we could be while still recognising that its us playing it.

Was the creation process different from your first EP? How difficult was it?
It was slightly different. We brought in Dave McPherson (from InMe) into the studio and ran over the demos with him before we recorded anything. The idea behind this was to get an opinion that was completely different to ours so we could introduce something new to the EP. He helped us really fill out the track to make them sound a lot bigger. Once the drums were down, then guitars and bass. However the vocals were done at Alex's studio because it has a better vocal sound. But it was a very similar process.

You're currently on the Blag & Whore tour, how has it been so far?
It's been amazing. It's great to get on the road playing to people who have never heard you before, especially when you get a warm reception.

Have you been on many tours before? What has been your favourite?
This is the first, so I'd have to say that this one has been my favourite hahaha.

How do the crowds react to your music?
It tends to be a decent reaction pretty much anywhere we go so we are fortunate in that respect.

How do you try to win over people that haven't heard you before?
We just play and perform to the best of our ability, and be as nice to the people who want to talk to us as possible.

What song goes down the best with the crowds?
My Shadow, which we usually play last. I think it's because it had nice sing along melodies, a few nice drop and a breakdown near the end or everyone to go nuts to.

What will the band be up to after the tour?
Booking the next tour hahaha. We want to reach as many people as possible.

Are there plans for an album?
There are plans for my albums, but we don't think we are quite ready to record an album yet. When we have the fan base, we will consider the thought of recording an album.

Why do you think people should listen to you and give you a chance?
Because it's not as hard to listen to as you might think. Were more of a Pussy Metal band who like their melody.
