Kids in Glass Houses - The Joiners, Southampton, 12th June 07
It’s not that often that relatively unknown support bands make a big impression, but after seeing Kids in Glass Houses support Manic Street Preachers last week, I was pretty impressed and pleased to hear they were playing my local venue.
Having seen them perform somewhere much larger, I wondered how their dynamic, high-energy performance would work in such an intimate venue. The Joiners was absolutely packed tonight which is testament to the band’s growing popularity. But unlike many newly popular bands, the crowd here tonight didn’t seem to be there to see the ‘next big thing’; they were genuine fans with which the band’s lively set really resonated. When the entire room sang back at the band, it was a great moment and something that seldom happens outside big arena shows.
Kids in Glass Houses' sound is catchy and upbeat, and whilst not part of any scene as such, they seem to have absorbed the influence of many of Wale’s big bands in the last few years and blended them together, creating their own unique style. ‘Easy Tiger’ encapsulates the band’s sound, with just the right proportion of rock and ‘doo doo doo’ pop bits, whilst and set closer ‘Me, me, me’ left the crowd pleading for an encore.
Kids in Glass Houses don’t attempt address big issues with their music, as seems to be the current trend, and that is what makes them such a great band to watch. It is refreshing to see a band just make music for the sake of music, and look like they’re having such a good time while they’re at it.
