Rising from the ashes of 'The Mascara Story,' comes 'Rescue The Astronauts,' a band including ex Mascara guys Daveit Ferris and Jay Dickinson.
After only forming in January 2006, the guys have finally settled on their current line up and have pulled together their latest two part concept EP release titled "Your Scissors/My Seatbelt".
I had heard about the band through The Mascara Story Myspace page and when this EP dropped through my letterbox, I was extremely happy to get the chance to review it and hopefully do it justice.

Track 1, "I Am Your Sugar Rush," begins with a soft intro, but before you know it the guitars really kick in, getting you tapping your foot along with the beat. The vocals are both strong and when listened to closely, the lyrics could be deemed mildly emotional. The chorus is extremely upbeat and very promising as a huge sing along song for any future gigs.
"Throwing Paper Airplanes" has one of the best intros I've heard in a long time, it has a sort of 80s arena rock feel to it and gets straight into the song just 6 seconds in. The song is full of impressive guitar riffs and drum beats. I have found that in past songs sung by Daveit, it has been difficult to hear each word of the lyrics, however, in Throwing Paper Airplanes, this is clearly not the case as every word is brilliantly sung and well thought out. The song begins to take a slower turn towards the end and just as you are fooled into thinking it is about to finish, Daveit and co kick it up another gear with even better guitar riffs and awesome vocals. After a couple of bridge and chorus repeats, the song draws to an abrupt close.

"Finely Tuned Frequencies" was the first song title from the EP that really stood out to me. The song begins with an acoustic feel to it but I think these guys just like to fool people because the guitars come in quickly after. Any 16/17 year olds will instantly be able to relate to this song which seems to be unsurprisingly, about a girl. Like the rest of the songs on this EP, Finely Tuned Frequencies is very catchy and will bring a nod of the head to anyone listening.
"Ideas To Resuscitate" is the last song from the EP and the longest, at a whopping 10 minutes 56 seconds long. The song is a lot heavier than the rest, causing it to instantly become my favourite overall. After just 3 minutes 17 seconds into the song, it ends. So what about the rest of it? A very long silence follows until we get just over 8 minutes in. Gradually a sort of sci-fi space sound starts to play, followed by muffled sounds of people speaking and laughing, one lady says 'This Is A Fun Place.' I'm not sure what the point of this was but its a nice surprise when you accidentally leave the CD running.

"Your Scissors/My Seatbelt" is a very impressive EP from Rescue The Astronauts. Described as a band that is about honesty, they certainly have a lot of it that flows throughout each song, singing about things that I find myself thinking about everyday.
On the bands Bio that I got with the CD, I would have liked to of found out a little more about the name of the band and how it came about.

I sincerely hope that Rescue The Astronauts are here to stay, hopefully longer than The Mascara Story ever were. I am looking forward to hearing more from these guys!
