Anberlin are a band I always find myself returning to, so when I heard the news of their new album, ‘Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place,’ I was eager to find out whether this band were still up to standard.
Thankfully they have proved their worth. Opening track ‘We Owe This To Ourselves’ hits the listener with epic force, it’s shotgun riffs shattering any previous reservations about this album. ‘Impossible’ is a grower, building a force of guitars, drums and vocals that come together in an almighty crescendo of sound.
Their overall sound has clearly developed and departed from their original, softer rock material. They have been overtaken by an aggression, a force that propels euphoria and soaring choruses into the stadium rock anthem ‘Take Me (As You Found Me),’ and sees heavy guitars cause waves of anxiousness in the frantic ‘Closer.’
While their passion and aggression roars through, Anberlin still manage to work in intricate, tranquil song intros while adhering to an atmospheric, pure rock sound. ‘Pray Tell’ is a personal stand out track for me, it’s stomping, marching beat works beautifully with the slightly off centre, eerie vocals and riff-tastic chorus.
It’s inevitable that a band are going to experiment when working with a new sound, which is exactly what Anberlin have done. The use of effects and synths throughout the album have proved successful, particularly in the bloodthirsty and ravenous ‘To The Wolves,’ where they build the perfect backdrop to the story.
Closing track ‘Depraved’ is the most ambitious, roaring track on the album. It’s as much of a punch as ‘We Owe This To Ourselves,’ bringing the listener full circle, through the band’s heavier and softer sides, through their experimentation and finally to the crashing final moments of ‘Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place.’
