There is something beautiful in Biffy Clyro. Having been Scotland’s greatest unknown band for twelve years, (from their formation in 1995 to the release of mainstream success album Puzzle in 2007) they were able to grow and mature their sound over time. Something which is unusual in this day and age, yes, but isn’t it nice?
Latest single, God and Satan, questions religion and the after life in a bewitching way. But again the beauty of Biffy shines through, and Neil’s vocals are most majestic as he muses, “I know for certain that some one is watching but is it from up or down?” Hailing from Ayrshire, Simon Neil’s singing voice holds as much of an accent as his speaking, and it’s this which gives the music most of it’s character. Teamed with the simplistic acoustic guitars, strings steady beat it could easily be a love song, yet it’s more than that. It’s philosophical with an agnostic twist.
In comparison to the earlier releases from 2009’s Only Revolutions, the song is stripped right down, a slow paced track with the lyrics as the focal point. It’s with songs such as these that Biffy Clyro’s song-writing is shown at it’s best. Not the average rock band are Biffy Clyro, but non the less are they brilliant, virtuosic and exciting. MON THE BIFFY!
