Burn The Fleet’s latest single ‘Black Holes’ dropped into my inbox this weekend and within one listen I was hooked. The record is heavy and melodic in equal proportions without sounding American in any way, which for some unknown reason is rare for UK metal or hardcore inspired bands.

The haunting guitar lines in the verse are contrasted with riffs of epic proportion throughout the chorus. Vocally the single has a similar pattern with a haunting quality to the verse contrasted with a passionate chorus, which is emphasised with complex layers of backing vocals.

This is how the record was described by front man Andrew Convey "Some people live their lives without even stopping for a moment to see who is around them, everyone following trends and blurring into one person. We look at this and see what we dislike most within our worlds, asking people to step back and take a look before it’s too late and everything falls into the black hole."

Lyrically the themes described by Convey above are recognisable throughout and the final line is beautifully emphasised by the fading out of the final notes. Despite a gloomy feel throughout this single there are glimmers of brightness giving the track almost endless layers to read into.

If I were to make comparisons there are elements that would fit Billy Talent and/or Sparta but neither influence over rides the individual sound Burn The Fleet are generating so much good publicity. Their reputation is in part down to accomplished live performances supporting Madina Lake, Twin Atlantic and Skindread amongst many others.

The single is out on October 4th through Walnut Tree Records who are one of the most exciting independent labels this country has to offer home to Burn The Fleet (of course) along with Viva Sleep, Tiger Please, Portman and my personal favourites Cuba Cuba. I’m hoping a full-length album follows up the single very quickly as I am yet to hear a track by Burn The Fleet that I don’t like.
