‘At The Bottom’ is the first taste of Brand New’s forthcoming fourth studio album, ‘Daisy.’
It starts in deceptively low-key fashion, with softly shuffling drumbeats and twangy, pointed chords, before bundling the listener into a vast chorus of foot-stamping drums, walls of fuzzy riffs and urgent, shout-along vocals. As ever, Brand New don’t make things easy for the listener. The lyrics are drenched in obscurity and labour after the poetic turn of phrase, rather than simply saying what they mean. However, frontman Jesse Lacey puts enough passion into his voice, to make you want to sing along to those intriguingly bizarre lyrics (“there’s a lake / and at the bottom you’ll find all our friends / they don’t swim ‘cause they’re all dead,” anyone?)
In fact, ‘At The Bottom’ would be a perfectly poetic piece of anthemic alt-rock, if it wasn’t for a sudden ‘this-song-has-ended-oh-no-it-hasn’t!’ interval towards the end, which is unnecessary, and destroys the gorgeously dark mood ‘At The Bottom’ has taken such pains to create. It cheapens what’s otherwise a damn-near-perfect alt-rock song, but it’s difficult to hold that against Brand New when the rest of ‘At The Bottom’ is so good.
