The five piece group Yorkshire based group is the culmination of ex-members from several other bands that have decided to step back from the harder edged sound they’d formally been producing for something with a touch of tenderness and care; though still embodying an edge to it.
‘Pictures Fade’ is an EP laced with harmony and heart and lingers in your head for days. ‘My Endorphin’ reminds of the wondrous crushing beauty that I hear every time I hear songs like Jimmy Eat World’s ‘23’ and it captures the enormity of the drama that you feel when the world is crashing down around you and need a little relief; this song is what that feels and provides that added hope and relief from their lyrics. It may sound like I’m being a tad dramatic but it is at the core of Cocean’s music that epic drama resides and speaks, almost akin to the work of Explosions in the Sky with extra guitars or Muse with slightly less electronics. Like finding an old note or being reminded of a forgotten memory, this EP is thoughtful and achingly honest in its complex style making the joy of their music simple.
With less than a year from forming Cocean have produced a debut four track EP that has a level of flare you might except from a fully blown studio album rather than a EP (all produced by drummer Jason Sanderson), which only leaves a big stage to fill for their next studio endeavour, which I have no doubt they’ll be able to fill.
