New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem could easily be the best Springsteen tribute band in the world if they wanted, but instead they’ve devoted their career to penning epic rock anthems that throw the punk energy of The Clash into the mix with Springsteen at his rowdiest.
Their third record, American Slang, may not be quite as good as The ’59 Sound, their previous release, but they only miss the bar by a hair.
Unlike their first two records, which make a point of referencing pop culture and their musical peers, on American Slang, The Gaslight Anthem focuses instead of creating a sound all their own.
The album opener – and title song – is destined to hold a permanent place near the top on their live repertoire. It’s everything a summer rock song should be, with sizzling guitar lines, a furious pace and Brian Fallon’s throaty wail lifting the lyrics above the din of the music.
As a whole, the album focuses on the band’s new home, New York City, with songs like 'Bring It On,' taking the famous poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty and turning it into a wake call for a new America.
'The Boxer,' the album’s lead single is about as catchy a track as the band has ever recorded. The guitar lines, wailing in the background like the broken boxer that Fallon sings of, are what pushes the song to greatness.
The album’s best track is “The Diamond Church Street Choir,” a beauty that sounds like the lost track from Springsteen’s The Wild, The Innocent and The E-Street Shuffle. Fallon is at his most soulful here, and the rest of the band falls in line to create one of the best songs of the year.
The only missing component on the album is a taste of the group’s softer side, which when done right, like on 'Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts' and 'Here’s Looking At You, Kid,' could melt the heart of even the most hardcore fan.
Still, with that one admission, The Gaslight Anthem have taken their music to the next echelon with plenty of passion and heart to go around. American Slang might just be their new anthem.
