You can be forgiven for not knowing of Greg or his record label A1 records, the label is a hidden gem and stands as one of my favourite independent labels in the world. Greg formerly went under the name Gregory Kraj and recorded some of the most individual sounding organ based modern reggae I have heard in a long time, over 16 albums and EP’s. In his new guise as Greg Arcade there is a real retro feel to his music standing close to artists like Little Richard in style.

The retro influences create an individual sound mixing complex guitars with raw percussion and rough vocals. There is an element of the early Stooges sound to the record but this is mixed with the guitar heavy style of early Rock ‘n’ Roll. The level of experimentation throughout the record is astounding with influences fused into a complex musical cocktail.

The new style embraced by Greg stands up to the modern surf punk styling that has become increasingly popular in the last few months through bands like the Vivian Girls, The Drums and Veronica Falls but adds bolder vocals and a level of complexity both vocally and musically.

The Lo-Fi sound created by the fuzzy distortion of the guitar creates an arty noise quality complimenting the husky vocals and simple drum lines beautifully. I love that Greg has taken a few steps further back in time to take his influence from the retro influence displayed by bands like the Gaslight Anthem and I hope that he is just as successful with his throwback to the fifties.

This EP is a perfect example of Lo-Fi retro sounds being added to a vast range of influences to create something really special. This is a perfect summer record and I’m sure will not get the credit it deserves, as I hear more from Gregory and his label I place him higher on my hidden gems list as in every musical direction he has taken he’s made some of the finest modern examples.
