In an industry that is overridden with disposable pop stars and reality show ‘winners’ it is always refreshing to hear an actual artist with original songs. Hailing from New Jersey, it is clear Youngs was influenced by numerous genres during the writing of her album ‘Batten The Hatches’.
Originally released in 2005, the album was re-released in 2007 on Canadian label Nettwerk with new artwork and an extra track ‘Drinking Song’.
Opening with a somewhat upbeat and poppy track ‘Porchrail’, the album flows smoothly from start to finish, leaving the listener with the urge to press Play again and again.
Youngs’ lyrics are perfectly written to complement the melody and clear influences can be heard from blues, folk, rock, jazz and even a little country.
The single ‘Fuck Was I’ appears to be an awkward title but the opening strings and drums absolutely captivate you before the lyrics jump in and you can’t help but agree with the song’s sentiment. In fact, the lyrics in every single song serve to highlight the emotions of those experiencing their late-teens and early-twenties in the perfect way. ‘Fuck Was I’ and ‘Drinking Song’ are perfect examples of this.
As for the rest of the album, Youngs doesn’t play a wrong note. ‘Voice On Tape’ and ‘Bricks’ are other standout tracks from an album that deserves more spins.
Youngs is currently writing her next album so keep your ear to the ground for more amazing tunes from New Jersey.
