Famed as one of the core bands of the mid to late nineties that shaped the American alternative rock scene, Jimmy Eat World have returned to the British shores after their recently released new record ‘Chase This Light’ to remind people why they are so well respected by their peers and people in the industry. They perform with a warm hearted nature that you might expect from your local hometown band but with the creative talent and skill of a first class finely tuned musical group. They’ve been around for over ten years and it shows in what they give forth in their show and I was truly blown over by just how great they were. I expected a good live show from them but it felt more like turning up to you school dance and being surprised with legends performing for you and your friends.

Kicking off with the first single of the new album ‘Big Casino’ the upbeat and optimistic theme for the evening is spread over the audience who are more than willing to take it on board and share their passion for the message. The night continued with a mix up of tasters from their back catalogue ranging from ‘Pain’ from the ‘Futures’ record to ‘For me this is Heaven’ from the land marking ‘Clarity’ as well as a selection of tracks from ‘Chase this Light’. Personally, one of the overwhelming moments of the show was the performance of ‘23’ which is not only a spectacular track on the ‘Futures’ album but is thrown into a totally new league when J.E.W. graces us with a live presentation. The atmosphere tingles with energy and you can see it in the reflection of everyone’s eyes as they are drawn in by the wonder of lights and sound.

It would be unfair to make a review without having any negative comments or criticisms as it would just be biased of me so here is mine; it was cold outside. I feel a whole lot better by getting that off my chest so I can return to my glowing memories of Jimmy Eat World, the shimmering backdrop and positively glittering live performance. This band haven’t lasted this long for no reason, it’s because they deliver time and time again to high standards.
