Indie is derived from the word independent, correct? Which, when you think about it, how possibly can many ‘indie’ bands today be classed as independent from mainstream music when many of their sounds are only a slight variation from the sound previously heard? This is precisely why Jon Jones and the Beatniks Movement are aiming to escape far, far away from the drab, monotonous sound of the current indie scene... to create a sound that is rather lacking sense and crammed full of deranged sounds, angst and fury.
Listening to their EP ‘Engine Power’ it is strikingly obvious that they have managed to fulfil what they set out to achieve. The sound has been described as ‘the musical equivalent of an epileptic fit’: you become unaware of your surroundings, rhythmic blinking and rapid breathing takes control and finally this accumulates to a complete loss of consciousness as you become immersed in the sheer obscurity of it all.
Forming in Bradford back in 2006, Jon Jones and the Beatniks Movement have already created a flurry of excitement up and down the country, with their unforgettable tracks and impressive list of support slots for the likes of The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster and Black Wire. Just be warned, Jon Jones and the Beatniks Movement should come with a health warning at the least, no one is held responsible if, whilst listening to their songs, you suffer bouts of insanity, nightmares or schizophrenic experiences. To be honest, it’s all part of the Beatniks experience.
