Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family live at the Scala - 27th Jan 2008

The intimate Scala proved to be the perfect setting for Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family and their quirky brand of touching yet upbeat folk music.
With 7 people in total taking the stage, including Liam Frost’s friend Nick on trumpet, they managed to have an impressive stage presence in the small venue.

Despite a slightly disappointing turnout, the bands were in high spirits, and played a lively rendition of their forthcoming single “She Painted Pictures” (Released 7th June on Lavolta Records). They were all clearly enjoying themselves, and their energy was infectious, and the crowd were soon waving and clapping along to songs like “I Woke up from the Strangest Dream”.

All clearly accomplished musicians, Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family seem at home playing their grief-ridden yet oddly uplifting music. It’s not surprising that they have already created a buzz of enthusiasm and interest in their hometown of Manchester, as their lush, instrument soaked songs make them stand out amongst the current explosion of indie bands.

The instruments that littered the stage included a harmonica, violin, and even a mandolin, which was used to full, heartbreaking effect on “She Painted Pictures”.
Liam’s vocals worked beautifully with all the instruments, giving his voice a floating quality, as if it was drifting out of his mouth and sweeping over the crowd. As a listener, it’s captivating.

As the end of the set approached, The Slowdown Family left the stage and Liam performed three songs alone. He seemed at home performing solo; it seems that constant live shows have honed his stage skills. “Try, Try, Try” in particularly sounded haunting and impressive.
The short solo set proved just what a talented singer/songwriter Liam is. He would’ve been forgiven for feeling lost alone on stage, after performing with such a large backing group, but he seemed at ease.
At one point, he noted the hundreds of heart shaped balloons decorating the hall and stage and quipped; “Someone must be in love. Not me though, I’m a singer songwriter!”

The music of Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family provides a welcome change from the grinding noise of the barrage of indie and rock that seems to have taken over the radio. They play the type of song you’re unlikely to hear anything quite like at the moment, and with such a strong live performance, fans are left feeling as if they’re part of something very special.
