Lost Prophets - Southampton Guildhall - February 26th 2010
Support: Sharks, Kids In Glass Houses
Music fans have needed an excuse to get excited about Lost Prophets as they’ve been off the radar for quite a while, but now, after the release of their new album ‘The Betrayed’ and the announcement of their UK tour, things are right again and Lost Prophets fans around the country have more than enough to get excited about.
Midlands rockers Sharks were the chosen support act for the second half of the tour and they did a relatively good job at warming up the crowd but unfortunately, there were many people who didn’t make it to the venue in time to catch their punchy brand of rock.
It was no surprise that fellow Welshmen Kids In Glass Houses were chosen as the main support act. It was clear that KIGH and Lost Prophets share many of the same fans as they were heard singing along wildly to the delights of the band’s hit singles ‘Give Me What I Want,’ ‘Saturday,’ and their newest release ‘Matters At All.’ KIGH put on such a good performance that it was well and truly clear that their support days are done with.
A dramatic light show and the thunderous tones of a thousand fans welcomed Lost Prophets onto the stage and into opening track ‘If It Wasn’t For Hate We’d Be Dead By Now,’ followed closely by ‘It’s Not The End Of The World But I Can See It From Here.’ Despite the tracks being relatively new they are signature Lost Prophets and felt like they had been around for years.
‘Burn Burn’ and ‘To Hell We Ride’ made the venue erupt in elation as the band rocked out in style to possibly two of the heaviest tracks of the night.
The band put all of their heart and soul into their performance and made damn sure that the crowd were having a great time. They threw jokes backwards and forwards between each other and engaged the front row members in some good old fashioned banter.
The band’s cover of The Prodigy’s ‘Omen’ went down tremendously, but it was tracks from the band’s albums ‘Start Something’ and ‘Liberation Transmission’ that really had the room shaking. Although a brisk cold winter night outside the venue, inside it felt like it was summer once again as old favourites ‘Last Train Home’ and ‘Last Summer’ rang out. Amongst the dancing and singing you could feel everyone being catapulted back to their memories of first hearing these monster tracks.
It was quite a tingling feeling hearing every fan singing the lyrics to ‘Rooftops’ back to the band, and for one last time, the ground shook to the beats of ‘Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja,’ but it was encore track ‘The Light That Burns Twice As Bright’ that brought the entire venue to a heart stopping standstill. Front-man Ian Watkins sung his heart out under a single spotlight, throwing down his mic as he finished and ending the show in a spectacular fashion.
