The most impressive thing about California’s Middle Class Rut, is the racket they can create with just two band members: drummer Sean Stockham and guitarist Zack Lopez.
‘All Walks Of Life’ isn’t the most varied of songs, but Middle Class Rut tread the ‘simple but effective’ route that’s becoming criminally overlooked in today’s attention-deficit music industry. A buzzsaw riff groaning back and forth across a knocking drumbeat, makes up the majority of ‘All Walks Of Life.’ A liberal helping of distortion helps to fill in the spaces between the drum and the guitar, ensuring Middle Class Rut sound remarkably like a ‘full’ band, rather than your typical White Stripes-esque twosome.
This bristling post-hardcore is finished off with chameleon vocals, as gravel-throated Lopez alternates between a raw, punkish snarl and a cool indie drawl. Middle Class Rut are clearly aware of ‘All Walks Of Life’s limited musical arrangement, and squeeze every bit of character and variety out of Lopez’s voice. It works brilliantly. Chances are, you’ll hardly notice that ‘All Walks Of Life’ is mostly just two riffs, a scattering of drumbeats and some distortion. Punkish post-hardcore with an intriguing lead vocalist. It makes you wonder what Middle Class Rut could cook up, with a few more band members.
