Moneen - The World I Want To Leave Behind

Myspace.com/Moneen

I bet, when you hear the combination of two words 'Canadian' and 'rock', you start laughing! Isn’t it something like American cuisine or English sauna you will ask? Although you are sure to stop laughing after you learn that Canadian rock is Billy Talent, The Birthday Massacre, Nickelback, Sum 41, Three Days Grace… and also a band called Moneen.

To tell you the truth, Moneen are not big fish in the musi cindustry. 'The World I Want to Leave Behind' is their first full-length album after a while. Even when on tours, they act more as a support band (of the above-mentioned Billy Talent, for example). The style of the band is not quite rock either: I would say it is good quality pop performed with a rock spirit or what Kenny Bridges (Moneen’s vocals and guitar) came up with – 'aggressive melodic pop'.

Anyway I cannot but admit that their live gigs are impressive, very loud, full of energy and wild jumping. 'The World I Want to Leave Behind' is a rather cute album that Iw ould compare with a visit to a psychoanalyst when you are telling the doctor about all your life troubles, doubts and regrets and suddenly he starts singing to you and dancing as they do in American musicals; “life is worth living”, “one day you will stop and settle down”, “you are searching for connections with the world united by the themes ofthese unfulfilled dreams”… The main single 'Hold that sound' will help you if you feel lost; 'Red eyes', 'Great escape,' 'Believe' and 'The Way' will convince you that everything will be fine, the world is your own and you just need to be patient.

'Redefine' will set the right life goals for you; and 'The Monument' will teach some moral lessons if you, bad boys and girls, do not care about the glory of London monuments. The course of psycho treatment also includes some bucking-up to the songs 'The Long count' and 'The Glasshouse' (with excellent guitar parts a la punk) and some relaxation to 'Waterfalls' (a melodic ballad with beautiful violin and piano parts).

After this you must be cheered up and ready to leave all your problems behind to face your own world in search for you and your love. Despite the fact that I found the album a bit draggy, I still want to compliment Moneen’s vocals and guitars – that’s what gives them great potential to become a more significant band. I was also surprised with the piano and violin parts that sounded pretty amazing in 'The Glasshouse' and 'Waterfalls.'

The band definitely has an ace up its sleeve so let’s see if they will be able to put it to good use.
