Murder By Death - Cervantes, Denver - April 2nd 2010
Support: Linfinity, Ha Ha Tonka

Murder By Death strode onto the stage at Cervantes to the kind of reception that most “indie” bands dream of: a roaring crowd, fists and hands thrown into the air, and a palpable that sense of something big is coming.

Based on their performance, the audience was right to expect something big from the foursome from Indiana, who delivered a foot-stomping, fervent performance to a crowd who sang along with almost every song.

The band, supported by openers Linfinity and Ha Ha Tonka, blasted through a set that relied on fan favorites (and drew largely from their most recent records). As a treat for the fans, there was an interlude in the middle of the show featuring a handful of songs from their forthcoming album, Good Morning, Magpie. Based on this new material – and its reception – it could well be their biggest release yet.

As lead singer/guitarist Adam Turla ripped his way through songs with a voice that sounds like prime Johnny Cash risen from the grave, and music crossing country, classical and rock, the energy created by both the band and crowd hit the roof and stayed their. One has to respect a band with the ability to keep that kind of energy flowing for an entire show.

The whole band was in prime form, but special note has to go to Sarah Balliet, who was able to coax out of her cello music simultaneously lovely and haunting, rocking and delicate. It’s a tribute to the band as a unit that they are able to incorporate this sound into what would otherwise be a hard rock act, and make the effect natural.

For fans of any group, the best thing about concerts is interaction with the band, and Turla was more than happy to banter with the audience, cracking jokes and telling stories. He and his band mates appeared genuinely grateful to be there, and the audience was just as pleased.

When one finds a band both unique and personable, equally able to entertain and provide a musical escape, it’s only a matter of time before that band hits the big time. With the passion they displayed, it’s only a matter of time for Murder By Death.
