Day We Caught The Train
Tonight saw the second night in Glasgow for OCS. Last night saw them play an acoustic set to an appreciative audience at the towns’ Royal Concert Hall.
OCS opened the show with one of their famous crowd pleasers, Riverboat Song, which as it happens is the first track I ever heard by the band when they played the first ever TFI Friday on Channel four. This was greeted in true Glasgow style by flying pints of lager. I’ve never understood fans getting ripped off for a pint then throwing it at the band you’ve just payed 30-odd quid to see!!!! Obviously, the recession is finished in Scotland when we’re throwing drink away.
The guys crashed through a blinding first part of the set, which included some favourites such as 'Magic Carpet' and 'You Got It Bad.' I think it was during 'So Low' that what could loosely be described as a bra was thrown on stage. I say loosely described as due to the size of it, I would have called it something more like a structural support, as both frontman Simon Fowler and bassist, Dan Sealey managed to fit their heads in a cup each, much to the approval of the crowd.
The pace of the gig changed after 'Drive Away,' with an acoustic style arrangement for the next half a dozen songs or so. Although taking a different direction, they held the audience with some strong songs including 'Mrs Jones,' which saw the whole band, except Simon, change positions and instruments, including Oscar Harrison coming out from behind the skins to play Bass, and 'She’s Been Writing,' a dedication to Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention, during which Steve Cradock treated us to some haunting guitar with a bit of bottlenecking. Finishing this more sedate section with 'Foxy’s Folk Faced,' they stormed into the final third of the set with 'Mrs Maylie,' which relit the fire under arguably one of the countries toughest crowds. 'Profit In Peace,' led into 'Old Pair Of Jeans,' where guitarist, Andy Bennet took the lead vocal on a track with a real rocky feel to it. As the crowd started to sense the impending end approaching, their volume raised by a few decibels, culminating in a mass sing along to 100 mile High.
After the now obligatory chanting of the bands name, they returned to provide a 4 song encore, finishing off with 'Day We Caught The Train.'
All in all, a resounding performance by the guys and after 2 nights on the bounce, I could have went a third.
