Rocky Loves Emily are a band that aren’t afraid of hard work. They’ve suffered the hardships of being an unknown band, having to self-book tours and play to any audience they can find. They built up their popularity through a string of acoustic sessions at Hot Topic stores around the US. This led them to their signing with Tooth and Nail records, the home of the mighty Anberlin and MxPx.
The band’s debut release, ‘American Dream’ is a sugarcoated dream for pop punk fans. Reminiscent of early The Maine and Cute Is What We Aim For, each track on the EP is a little trinket of infectious, frenzied delight. Smooth vocals, happy-go-lucky melodies and the occasional guitar riffing moment make up snippets of a good EP release. In the moment, you’ll find yourself bopping along nicely, but turn the tracks off and you won’t find yourself singing them unexpectedly.
The EP lacks the aggression and power needed to be memorable. As a flurry of new pop punk bands fill up the scene, I’m afraid ‘American Dream’ will get lost, fading without making an impact.
