This is a group that is very interestingly put together. Self described as sounding like “three guitars, twelve vocals, nine drum machines, seven glockenspeils, one floor tom and three songwriters meets Simon and Garfunkel, The Arcade Fire and Pink Floyd” this Oregon trio provides a sound that is intensely melodic. Possessing a dynamic and full vocal harmony that is coupled with surprisingly aggressive guitar tracks, Stars of Track and Field provide a very interesting sound to take in.
By the time they take the stage, the room is three quarters of the way full, and at first, the audience seems more than into what it is they are delivering. The band’s sound is mellow and heartfelt – music to be played at chick lounge-type parties in order to set a mood but I would be reluctant to place them up on a stage before an alternative rock crowd and expect them to hold their own.
While at first, their music is intense and captivating, and while it works staggeringly well on CD or vinyl, on stage, the group is unfortunately yawn-inducing…and it’s not for lack of trying on the band’s part. There is head-banging and the attempted stage-writhing that can be expected from most guitarists/vocalists who really “get into” their music, but it seems more than out-of-place when held against the mellow and harmonic drive of the music itself.
I liked them, at first. I really did. But by song 5, I was ready for them to leave the stage and make room for a band that could actually captivate and hold my attention.
