With an album title such as ‘Bears!’ you can tell that That Was Something clearly have no trouble with having a little fun with their fan base and going for something interesting that grabs you before you’ve even put the record on. The influence of Jimmy Eat World in the lyrical styling and All American Rejects meets The Academy Is in the melody work proves this band can capture a mix of old and new bands of their musical tastes without fading into the mist of the hundreds of other bands that often sound the same. That was Something really are something and I can honestly say I’ve been listening to their record more than anything else on my MP3 since I got it.

Currently going through some line up issues as they’ve parted ways with their old lead singer and are in the progress of searching for a replacement; information about this if anyone is interested is on their MySpace site, the boys can still pull out the punches and hope it’s all for the best. With any band, it is not just about one person but all the players and parts that make it hold strong. The boys are positive and there are high hopes that even with a new singer the band will continue playing and producing new work.

The ‘Bears!’ album shows great promise as not only a studio band but a live band as the record has a presence that could so easily transfer into an enthusiastic and energetic live show. For fans of bands from the Fuelled by Ramen camp and others of that trend; with an optimistic and upbeat tone this album is more than worth your time. Best tracks to check out are ‘Go Get a Switch and Turn Yourself On’, ‘Here Comes Treble’ and ‘Affirmative!’. This ticks all my boxes so hopefully once they have a new singer in place they’ll make their way to my next of the woods with Bears and all in tow.
