The Boy Who Trapped The Sun is a singer-songwriter from the U.K, looking to tap into the States’ seemingly unquenchable thirst for these types of acts.
It’s an attempt that the Home EP won’t prove entirely successful, but does open the door for him if he can find his place musically.
The EP’s five cuts feature the standard fare for an early, indie release: mostly acoustic guitar driven numbers, with some electric guitar or pianos sprinkled throughout to add a little flavor. The vocals are uniform throughout, calling to mind Thom Yorke or Glen Hansard from the Swell Season.
'Home,' features Nick Drake-esque guitar stylings, with a driving funky base in the background, before it dissolves into a quasi-Radiohead ending. 'In the Dark' channels Iron & Wine at it’s simplest, while 'Lying to Get on Your Good Side,' is a bit like Bon Iver, except a lot creepier. If he tries to get on someone’s good side with that voice, the end result is doubtful at best. But maybe that’s part of the joke.
The best two songs are 'The Fox,' and 'Change the Clocks,' which are mainly guitar-focused songs with the piano used as a haunting piece of background music, that lulls the listener in. They both feature the best lyrics on the EP, and demonstrate that when The Boy focuses, he can do some serious songwriting.
The main problem is that he can’t decide if he wants to be who he wants to be. Each song has a different inspiration, which is fine, except that it’s obvious who the inspiration is, instead of taking that spark and turning it into something uniquely his.
One The Boy Who Trapped The Sun sorts that out, he won’t be trapped anymore, himself.
