It’s not often that you come across a band as unique as The Buddha Cakes, a trio from London who have managed to combine quirkiness with a desire for a diverse array of musical instruments; ranging from the ‘traditional’ bass to the less well known – but still equally as intriguing – harmonium.
It is this mix that gives the music a somewhat Parisian chic sound; the type of music that is hidden away on a street corner whilst crowds of onlookers watch gleefully, tapping their feet to the catchy beat. Oh and of course adorning a typical French beret. This ‘Parisian chic sound’ is clearly evident in tracks ‘June’ and ‘Full Stop First Step’ which both serve up a portion of modern beats hidden within a much older sound.

Furthermore, like the strikingly beautiful women of France, track ‘Which Side Are You On’ begins angelically (and is almost the epitome of a magical fairytale) that is built upon to create a track that is certainly clear evidence of the bands ability to create tracks with emotion and depth.
Caught up in this individual sound it is hard to remember that this trio are actually from London, as their sound is a far cry from the similar drones of music that are being churned out in the current British music scene. Interestingly the band has associations with Mighty Boosh favourites ‘Robots In Disguise’ after touring with them earlier this year and having contributed to B-sides ‘Sex Has Made Me Stupid’ and ‘Turn It Up' their popularity is definitely on the up.

This is unconventional music at its best, so clean out your accustomed ears and gets listening to something with a bit of edge, grit and tenacity.
