The sixties - a time of innovation, a time of love and peace, and a great time for popular music. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who - so many greats, formed within just ten years. The music is amazing, most artists are now considered heroes, their songs are the classics. Yet now, in 2010 - half a century on - all girl quartet The Like are replicating the sound which formed music as we now know and love it. Are they going to reach the classic status of their idols? The answer is no. Sadly, their latest single doesn’t pack the same punch as their predecessors.
This week the LA based group released He’s Not A Boy, and it’s not necessarily bad - it’s just nothing new. Their sound is one which we’ve all heard before, and one which hasn’t been mainstream since the days of our parents. Perhaps through entering this psychedelic time warp, The Like hoped to create something for those who weren’t here to experience the actual sixties. However, the sixties as it was here in Britain was very different from that of The Like’s homeland. May be our friends across the Atlantic felt they missed out on what was first and foremost a part of British culture? Regardless, the influences from this time are evident - particularly in the music video which accompanies the track.
The song is fun, catchy and radio-friendly. It may sell well if those born in the fifties wish to relive their youth, or if today’s adolescents deem themselves ‘indie’ or ‘alternative’ enough to listen. Good luck to The Like - leading the anti-innovation since 2010.
