“I hope I die before I get old.”
One of the most memorable lines in a long history of great lyrics, this line stands out because it summarizes so much of what The Who have stood for – playing music as loud as they want, destroying their instruments, writing about subjects as varied as rock operas about people with mental disorders to some of the most devastatingly simple blues songs.
Quite simply, they’re one of the first rock bands.
There’s been several greatest hits records for the band, and while the newest doesn’t differ too greatly, it’s certainly a solid collection for people new to the band. It’s got all one could want: ‘My Generation,’ ‘Pinball Wizard,’ ‘Baba O’Riley,’ and ‘Who Are You’ just to name a few.
The real money is in getting the deluxe version, which has live versions of essentially every track, taken from a wide range of points in the band’s career. There’s cuts from as early as 1965 at the BBC to cuts from their most recent album, just a couple years back. The Who have always been an amazing live band, and while it’s not the same as seeing the band in concert, the second disc gives listeners a taste of what stage masters they were.
Major fans won’t find anything new except on the live disc, but for new fans, this is the perfect start.
