The arrival of The Junior Varsity adds yet another string to Victory's bow. Taking the emo-punk template but adding a sense of creativity missing from a lot of their peers, the album bubbles with technical guitar, gargantun hooks (the anthemic chorus of "The Sky" for example) and lyrics from the heart which, thankfully, don't make you want to wince. Take note emotional also-rans.

There is also an English influence on tracks such as St.Louis, which would bring to mind The Smiths if Morrissey had spent more time listening to punk-rock and less time with his head in books. Perhaps the album could do with a few more out and out anthems, but I'm sure this will come as the band matures. Mixing a variety of minor chords in with the standards, The Junior Varsity have made a genuine attempt to write something original in a genre starving for ideas. They wont be showered in plaudits for excessive invention, but it is clear they are trying without ever forgetting the need for a good song.

A solid record and another fine signing to Victory, I wouldn't be suprised to be hearing more from these guys soon.
