When a band personally emails you with their EP, hoping for a review, it shows real dedication and passion, which I always hope will spill over into their music. When I received the debut release from East Midlands quartet, To Bury A Ghost, it was clear right from the off that this band put everything they have into this record.

‘The Hurt Kingdom’ launches into a grand trumpet introduction and it feels like things are really going to kick off, but the track slowly morphs into a solemn, haunting piece of music. The lull of Jonathon Stolber’s vocals mix beautifully with the soft keys and dampened drum beats.

‘Coming Up For Air’ throbs through the speakers, picking up the pace of the EP as bolting guitars rip and scratch their way to the surface. ‘Jaws of Love’ is an elegant, dreamy track, with the soaring vocals and hammering riffs working in total harmony together.

‘Beginning Is The End’ is a staggering 6 minutes long, but those 6 minutes are filled with the most epic riffs and sweeping tones. Anticipation builds to create an angst induced flurry of snarling riffs and beastly drums accompanied by supple strings and keys to create an orchestra effect.

The Lee J Malcom remix of ‘Coming Up For Air’ at the end of the EP has been cited as the ‘black sheep’ of the EP with many believing that it doesn’t really work. However, it is still in-keeping with the atmospheric tones and epic-ness of the release and it makes for a more up-beat ending. Unfortunately, ‘Beginning Is The End’ is too much of a sublime track to be forgotten and as it is the strongest contender of the entire release, it would have been the perfect song choice to end on.

That little niggle aside, ‘The Hurt Kingdom’ is a truly outstanding debut release. It’s not often that an EP leads you on such a euphoric journey. I’m sure the band don’t mind being constantly compared to the mighty Muse, as their sound certainly wouldn’t be out of place on the kinds of stages those guys play.
