It’s quite uncommon for a band to start receiving much success only a year after forming, so We Are The In Crowd must be doing something extremely right!
They were signed to Hopeless Records after their formation in 2009. Their debut EP ‘Guaranteed to Disagree’ has received many a positive review already, so what’s their secret? Perhaps it’s the fact they have two lead singers or maybe it’s because their new EP is the biggest pop rock explosion to happen in a long time.
Upon listening to the EP, it’s easy for people to dismiss this band as the next Paramore wannabes due to Tay Jardine’s bubble-gum vocals, but how wrong they are. We Are The In Crowd are ready and waiting with a surprise attack in the form of Jordan Eckles, whose gruff vocals are a unique contrast.
‘Guaranteed To Disagree’ is powerful beyond belief and it’s staggering to think that a relatively new band have found their sound so quickly. As Tay and Jordan bounce off one another throughout the tracks, it feels like we’re listening in on a private conversation, stroke argument, between two lovers.
‘Carry Me Home’ is the perfect opening track, like a tornado blasting its way through a city; it leaves no stone left unturned. ‘Never Be What You Want’ see’s the band experiment successfully with samples and effects to create a more serious rock track, but it’s ‘Both Sides of the Story’ that really jumps out. It’s ferocious and full of energy and includes some of the most sarcastic and witty one-liners of the entire EP.
‘Lights Out’ is another stand out track, though less teenage tantrum this time around. It’s much more developed and showcases the band’s abilities to create a real, crashing pop rock anthem for the masses. ‘We Need A Break’ is a dance tinged showdown between our two lovers, culminating in an almighty singing match surrounded by the crunch of guitars and the supple ringing of keys.
The piano is much more prominent in the rocking ‘For The Win.’ This track is less fluffy pop punk and more beefy rock track with Tay and Jordan’s vocals working harmoniously together. The introduction of gang vocals may be a bit late in the EP but they are very welcome and mix things up a bit. ‘For The Win’ could have closed the EP perfectly, as ‘Calendar Pages’ does little to round of the EP in a memorable fashion.
Overall, ‘Guaranteed To Disagree’ is an impressive piece of work from a newborn band. It builds from bottled up teenage angst to a more grown up, progressive EP and they manage to throw off any Paramore comparisons within minutes. Although the pop rock thing is being done successfully elsewhere, these guys are more than ready to push those guys aside and stand in what will soon be their rightful position as head of the game.
